Alumni Spotlight: Pete Ginnegar '80 Selected to Help Coach Team Israel Men's Lacrosse

Israel Lacrosse has announced the coaching staff for the men’s national team that will debut in exhibition play at the 2012 European Lacrosse Championships in Amsterdam. Jon Barocas, Mark Greenberg and Pete Ginnegar, a 1980 graduate of Queens College with a bachelor’s degree in physical education, will serve as assistant coaches, joining head coach Bill Beroza on the blue-and-white’s bench.

“As a developing lacrosse nation, we’re thrilled with the wealth of experience our coaching staff brings to the table as we make our international debut,” said Israel general manager Howard Borkan. “This is the right group to develop players who can make an impact in Israel for years to come. It’s truly a luxury to have them all on board.”

“I would like to thank the leadership at Team Israel and Head Coach Bill Beroza for providing me with this once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Ginnegar. “I am very excited to be a part of the development team that will help to build the sport of lacrosse in Israel. I am truly honored and humbled to be given this chance to grow the game.”

Coach Ginnegar is in his eighth season coaching the Claremont Cougars and his 29th overall as a college lacrosse coach. During those 29 years, “Coach G.” has been to an array of colleges ranging from Division 1 powerhouses to small club teams in Southern California. He has coached at Division I schools: Ohio State, Cornell, Gannon, and Mercyhurst. Along with these top D-I schools, Coach Ginnegar also served stints at Divison II Springfield College, as well as jobs at D-III schools: Mount Union, Lake Forest, Babson, and Mary Washington. Lastly, Ginnegar has found new homes on the west coast while coaching at Southwest Lacrosse Conference schools University of California at Santa Barbara, USC, and Loyola Marymount.  His lifetime lacrosse coaching record is 242-150. He was named the USILA national coach of the year in 2006.

Aside from coaching, Ginnegar was a three-sport varsity student-athlete at Queens, as he participated in lacrosse, ice hockey and soccer. During the summer, he has served as a camp director for various Camps, and is currently the Director of Marketing for Athletic Programs with Bob McCloskey Insurance Agencies, Inc. Ginnegar has two daughters, Chloe (19), a freshman lacrosse player at the University of Puget Sound, and Molly (17), who attends Western Reserve Academy in Ohio.
