FLUSHING, N.Y. (Jul. 9, 2018) - Queens College is represented in the 2017-18 East Coast Conference Play of the Year bracket by women's basketball guard Beth Bonin and men's soccer midfielder Andras Breuer.
The bracket was released last week with first-round qualifiers whittling down the field to its current standing of 32 of the top plays from the 2017-18 season in East Coast Conference play. The nominees include plays from across the world of ECC athletic competitions including baseball, basketball, bowling, lacrosse, soccer, softball and volleyball. Voting began Monday (Jul. 9) on the East Coast Conference twitter page and votes will continue until the ultimate play of the year is crowned.
For the Knights, Bonin is actually up for the vote on both sides of the bracket as two of her plays were deemed worth of POTY consideration. The now-junior guard received ECC Play of the Week honors back on Jan. 13 for a buzzer-beating three-pointer in Bridgeport to knock off the Purple Knights in a critical East Coast Conference tie. Bonin's game-winner is pitted against a defensive web gem from NYIT's Joey Fusco; both plays can be viewed by clicking here.
Bonin's entry on the opposite side of the bracket came earlier in the year in non-conference play. On Nov. 29, 2017, the guard drilled a half-court three-ball at the first-half horn against Dominican (N.Y.) as the Knights utilized that momentum to earn a regional victory over the Chargers. Similar to her first match-up, Bonin's play is slotted against a long home run by Giovanni Dingcong of Saint Thomas Aquinas over the left field scoreboard at PCU Park; both plays can be viewed by clicking here.
Meanwhile, Breuer's Play of the Year consideration is predicated on his Play of the Week from Oct. 7, 2017. The high-scoring midfielder curled in a left-footed free kick for a beautiful goal against LIU Post and won POTW in that week's contest. Breuer's magnificent strike goes up against NYIT's Dominic Josephs and his high-flying alley-oop dunk against Roberts Wesleyan; both plays can be viewed by clicking here.
Show your Queens College spirit and your Knight Pride by voting early and often for Bonin and Breuer to advance to the Round of 16! Do so by heading to the East Coast Conference twitter page (@ECCSports) and casting your vote!
