BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The Queens College baseball team's offense was held in check on Thursday in a 3-0 road setback to East Coast Conference (ECC) rival LIU Post, ending the Knights' three-game winning streak. Queens falls to 10-14 overall and 4-8 in the ECC, while LIU Post improves to 15-13 overall and 7-4 in the conference.
Despite the loss, senior right-hander Joseph Broderick (3-4) had another quality start for the Knights on the mound. He accumulated 11 strikeouts over his six innings of work, allowing three runs on six hits and walking just one.
The Pioneers scored their three runs in the first two innings, and that was all starter James Varela (1-4) needed to work with. Varela gave up just one hit over seven shutout innings, while fanning eight, before Brian Tinney and Dan Jagiello (Sv, 7) came in to close it out.
Anthony Vaglica got the Pioneers on the board in the first inning with a two-run single through the left side. Rob Andreoli then made it a 3-0 game with an RBI single to left in the bottom of the second. Meanwhile, LIU Post held Queens to just three hits on the day.
Queens and LIU Post will continue their five-game series with a doubleheader at Hennekens Stadium on Saturday, April 15, beginning at noon.
