Tom Sowinski is the 16th head coach in the history of Queens College baseball, having come on board in Fall of 2009. He brought over 21 years of collegiate coaching experience with him to Flushing, including the first 15 years of his coaching career that were spent as associate head coach and pitching coach at Adelphi University (1985-99). During his tenure at AU his teams participated in four Division II College World Series and seven NCAA Regional Tournaments (winning four). Sowinski also coached three ECAC Champions, six NYCAC Champions and three Knickerbocker Conference Champions. In 1996, AU finished in third place in the College World Series - just one shy of playing for the NCAA Division II Championship crown.
After his time at Adelphi, Sowinski spent one year as Head Coach at Queensborough Community College before moving on to Manhattan College as the Jaspers' Associate Head Coach/Pitching Coach. In his five years at Manhattan (2000-2005), the baseball team earned its first MAAC playoff berth ever, while 14 players - eight of them pitchers - signed contracts to play professional baseball.
Upon leaving Manhattan College, Sowinski worked for Diamond Pros giving pitching lessons, doing clinics and coaching in summer leagues.
In his playing days, Sowinski was mentored by two New York coaching legends. He first played for Jack Curran at Archbishop Molloy High School, where he was named to the All-City team three times and was chosen All-City Most Valuable Player twice. He compiled a 30-2 record at Molloy and was also the starting and winning pitcher in each of Coach Curran's first two City Championships.
After graduating from Molloy High School, Sowinski moved on to St. John's University, where he anchored coach Jack Kaiser's pitching staff. That staff led SJU to two Division I College World Series, where the then-Redmen placed third each time. In 1968, Sowinski was named an All-American while earning a spot on the College World Series All-Tournament Team on the strength of a 2-0 record (including a shutout) in World Series play. Sowinski still hold several St. John's pitching records, including most wins (11) and shutouts in a single season (7), respectively. In his three years on the varsity he compiled a won-loss record of 41-7.
Upon his graduation from St. John's with a BBA, Sowinski pitched professionally in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization, winning 16 games against seven losses in three seasons.
Included among the honors that Sowinski has received over the years are his induction into the St. John's University Hall of Fame and the Archbishop Molloy High School Hall of Fame. He is also a Cassell Award Winner (Adelphi University Hall of Fame). Sowinski lists Kaiser and Lou Carnesecca as his idols, and the James Bond fan resides in Howard Beach, N.Y.
