FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College men's tennis team improved to 2-0 in the East Coast Conference (ECC) with a 7-2 victory over the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) on Friday afternoon. The Knights also improved to 4-0 at home with Friday's win at the QC Tennis Center.
Queens took a 2-1 lead after doubles play by taking wins at the second and third flights. The Knights then easily captured five wins in singles competition to take the 7-2 victory.
Gabriel Mendez and Lucas Martinez teamed up for an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles to start things off before Cosme Jubera and Miguel Bendito collected an 8-3 win in the third spot. UDC edged out a 9-8 (5) win in a tiebreaker at top doubles to make things interesting.
Sharvill Nawghre rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win at the top flight to set the tone in singles play. Mendez added a 6-0, 6-2 win at second singles shortly after, and Richard Sec earned a 6-3, 6-0 victory in the third slot. Cosme Jubera claimed a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles, and Camilo Arias garnered a 6-3, 6-4 win in the fifth spot. The Firebirds' lone singles win came at No. 6 in three sets.
Queens is right back at it on Saturday, April 1, for a home match against Chestnut Hill College at the QC Tennis Center at 6 p.m.
