Men's Tennis Concludes Florida Swing With Losses to Florida Southern and Barry

ORLANDO, Fla. (Mar. 17, 2018) - The Queens College men's tennis team is returning home to Flushing following two final setbacks at the USTA National Campus with a 6-3 defeat to Florida Southern on Friday (Mar. 16) and a 5-1 loss against No. 2 Barry on Saturday (Mar. 17).

3/16/18: Florida Southern 6, Queens (NY) 3

Cosme Jubera and Richard Sec were victorious in second doubles for the Knights, defeating FSC's tandem of Tim Becker and Derek Bell by an 8-4 score. Unfortunately, the Mocs proved too strong in all other doubles matches and had the victory sewn up before QC picked up wins at fifth and sixth singles. Sec claimed a 6-1, 7-6 (6) win over Matt Matsuyama at the fifth flight and Jose Zurro was a 6-1, 6-4 straight-sets victory over Oscar Soderlund. Roman Laga was an unlucky third-singles player as he lost a third-set tiebreak to Florida Southern's Victor Ahlbeck by a 7-5 score to keep QC from cutting the deficit further.

3/17/18: No. 2 Barry 5, Queens (NY) 1

Laga and Gabriel Mendez claimed an 8-5 win at first doubles over Filip Zupanic and Flavio Matteoli, but the Buccaneers won the two other doubles matches before taking three singles matches for the 5-1 decision. Second, fifth and sixth singles remained unfinished with the outcome already decided.

The Knights will play host to East Coast Conference foe Daemen College on Friday (Mar. 23) at the QC Tennis Center with first serve scheduled for 12 p.m.
