BOYDS, Md. (Mar. 30, 2018) - The Queens College men's team won four matches in singles to distance themselves from a game UDC squad in a 6-3 triumph over the Firebirds on Friday (Mar. 30) in our nation's capital.
Queens (13-4, 3-0 ECC) went up by a 2-1 margin over UDC (4-6, 0-2 ECC) after doubles play with the top tandem of Gabriel Mendez and Roman Laga avenging Tuesday's defeat to Concordia with an 8-2 win over Firebirds duo Diego Pinto and Josip Marinic. Richard Sec and Jose Zurro outlasted their opponents at No. 3 doubles, claiming a 9-7 win against Ander Murillo and Marco Feligioni.
The Knights peppered the opponents when it came to singles play as the team was able to nab its third conference win of the season in stride. Laga and Zurro won in straight sets at No. 3 and No. 6 singles, respectively; it would be Mendez and Cosme Jubera gritting out the final two points for QC by taking their opponents the distance. Mendez defeated Rok Bozic by a three-set score of 7-6 (3), 3-6 and 6-1 at the top-flight while Jubera dropped a 4-6 first set to Alexis Baguelin before storming back to win the second and third sets, 6-0 and 6-4.
Queens will take to the road on Wednesday (Apr. 4) for an ECC showdown with Saint Thomas Aquinas College at 3 p.m.
