SPARKILL, N.Y. (Apr. 21, 2018) – The Queens College women's lacrosse team dropped a back-and-forth contest to Saint Thomas Aquinas on Saturday (Apr. 21) by a score of 16-10 at Spartan Field in Sparkill.
Queens (5-9, 1-6 ECC) opened the scoring as Mary Pat Gibble tallied the first of her three opening-half goals for the Knights just over ninety seconds into the contest. QC's lead quickly dissipated as Caroline Finnen netted two straight goals for STAC (6-8, 3-5 ECC) to give the Spartans a 2-1 lead. The game went back and forth from there as Gibble evened the score with her second before Kaitlyn Gutenberger tallied back-to-back goals. Queens knotted the score up midway through the half as Lauren Gentile and Patriece Ausili both scored goals; the Knights then grabbed a 6-4 lead with six-and-a-half minutes to go in the frame on Gibble's third and Ausili's second of the contest. The hosts trailed by one at the halftime break as Gutenberger slotted home a tally with eight seconds remaining in the first half of play.
Rebecca Gibble collected her first goal of the game off a feed from Ausili to open scoring with less than two minutes played in the second half. The Knights' 7-5 lead was wiped away as STAC netted six unanswered markers over the next ten minutes of play; Gutenberger tallied two more goals as Caitlin Verber added two while Gabrielle Di Fusco and Emma Notarino each put home a goal to give the Spartans an 11-7 edge at the mid-point of the half. The last-gasp rally for QC ensued as Margaret Iavarone scored with 14:19 left in regulation before each of the Gibbles added another goal. Rebecca Gibble's marker with 9:59 to play got the Knights within one goal but Gutenberger scored thrice more and Varber added another as STAC coasted to the conference win.
Ausili's five points were the Knights' high as the Gibble sisters combined for a double hat trick with Mary Pat scoring four times and Rebecca adding two and a team-high three ground balls. Ausili also added two caused turnovers to her account and Jessica Serpe stopped four shots in the effort.
The Knights will play host to NYIT on Wednesday (Apr. 25) with the game beginning at 3:30 p.m. at QC Lacrosse Field.
