FLUSHING, N.Y. (Sept. 29, 2018) - The Queens College women's soccer team put up a gritty effort against the sixth-best team in the country but an early goal in the first fifteen minutes of the game sent Mercy to a 1-0 win over the Knights on Saturday (Sept. 29) in Flushing.
Mercy (7-1, 3-0 ECC) scored the lone marker of the contest in the 11th minute of play as Anicia Reyes headed home a cross by RaeAnn Ioannou past Queens (2-5-1, 1-1-1 ECC) keeper Shenae Kreps. The Knights and Mavericks both mustered just two shooting chances in the opening half of play with QC's best effort---a 23rd-minute shot by Agnes Stanton---saved by Mercy goalie Melissa Torres.
The visitors dominated play in the second half with the first couple of shots being taken by Mavericks players until the 64th minute as an equalizing effort from Shannon Gibbons was parried away by Torres. Gibbons had one last chance to level the score with eight minutes to play but her attempt was also stoned by Torres as the Mavs were able to preserve the clean sheet.
Mercy outshot Queens by a 10-4 margin with the Mavericks getting four shots on target to QC's three. Kreps made two saves in net, with one shot being cleared off the back line by the Queens defense.
The Knights will open October with a Tuesday (Oct. 2) afternoon matinee at LIU Post. Kick-off is set for noon.
