BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, NY – The Queens College men and women's swimming and diving team had a slew of noteworthy performances in Monday's tri-meet competition with St. Francis College and Saint Peter's University on their way to six event wins.
Sophomore Jennifer Arana-Perez had a hand in two of those victories, the first of which came in the women's 200-yard butterfly. Arana-Perez swam away from the competition, finishing in 1:03.75 to win by nearly three seconds. She returned later in the meet's penultimate event to help Queens College nab first in the women's 200-yard freestyle relay. The Knights' grouping of Arana-Perez, Katie Waszkiewicz, Nicole Weinsheimer and Elizabeth Hodges swam a combined 1:46.44 to just edge out hosts St. Francis College, who had to settle for second in 1:46.84.
Favorable swims by the Knights freshmen punctuated the women's efforts on the day. Amanda Giordano recorded a personal best in the 1,000-yard freestyle, covering the lengthy distance in 12:45.59 for third place. Anna Lee also swam below her seed team to finish third the women's 100-yard breaststroke to in 1:15.93. And Hodges was slightly off her personal best in the 200-yard free and the 100-yard, but still managed to finish third in both events in 2:07.09 and 56.87 seconds, respectively.
On the men's side, Moustafa Ibrahim made his season debut in the 3-meter dive, scoring 190.55 to win unopposed. He also competed independently in the men's 1-meter event, but still achieved a season- best result by scoring 261.75 points. Senior Mateusz Stypulkowski swam well in the men's 50-yard freestyle to finish second in 22.54 seconds. And Joseph Mo added another second-place result to the Knights' total just two events later, completing the 200-yard individual medley in 2:03.92 – two-hundredths of a second off his seeded time.
Both teams are back in action Thursday, January 19, in a dual meet with SUNY Maritime. The first swim at the Riesenberg Aquatic Center is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
