  • Queens College Athletics Holds Year-End Awards Banquet

    The Queens College Department of Athletics hosted its annual Year-End Awards Banquet on Tuesday evening at the Harbor Links. The department celebrated the many accomplishments from the 2016-17 season and handed out major department awards, while each team distributed individual sport awards.
  • Nagel, Minami Pick Up ITA Regional Tennis Honors

    Queens College head women’s tennis coach Alan Nagel and men’s and women’s assistant coach Fabio Minami have been honored with regional awards from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Nagel was named Wilson/ITA East Region Coach of the Year, while Minami earned East Region ITA Assistant Coach of the Year for both men and women.

    Down 2-1 after doubles play, the Queens College women’s tennis team battled back to defeat the Goldey-Beacom College Lightning, 5-2, in the NCAA Division II East Region II Finals on Tuesday. With the win, the Knights (14-3) advance to the Round of 16 for the second time in three years and sixth time in the last eight seasons.

    The Queens College women’s tennis team was selected as a No. 2 seed in the upcoming NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis Championship on Tuesday evening. Queens will also be the host for East Region II, while earning a first-round bye.

The Knights, who are 3-0 so far this spring, improve to 12-2 on the season, while handing the Panthers (12-5) their first loss since September.

    A quartet of Queens College women's tennis players were recognized with East Coast Conference All-Conference honors, the league announced. Senior Angelika Sobiecka, junior Emy Alplund and sophomores Laura Ortega Jover and Line Sorsdahl Aasen were all named to the Second Team ledger, while head coach Alan Nagel was named ECC Coach of the Year.

With the win, the Knights improved their overall record to 8-0, 6-0 in ECC, while the Wildcats dropped to 6-10 overall and 1-5 in conference action. The match was shortened and played to decision due to temperatures below 50 degrees at the Ellicott Tennis Courts.

    The Queens College women's tennis team placed second in the ECC Preseason Poll, the league announced Monday. For the second straight year, New York Institute of Technology was selected as an unanimous favorite by the leagueʹs coaches. NYITʹs Lena Dimmer was selected by the coaches as the Preseason Player of the Year.
