WEST BABYLON, N.Y. – Junior Reehan Rashad of the Queens College women's tennis team was named the first East Coast Conference (ECC) Player of the Week of the 2017 fall season on Tuesday following her performance in the Knights' 7-2 season-opening win over West Liberty at home on Friday.
Rashad kicked off the new season by cruising to victory at top flight singles and doubles, as Queens opened the season on a winning note. She teamed with classmate Laura Ortega Jover for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles before rolling to a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles.
After joining the team last year during the spring season, Rashad went 4-2 at top singles and 5-2 alongside Ortega Jover at second doubles. She finished ranked eighth in the ITA East Region singles rankings, while her and Ortega Jover finished ninth in the ITA East Region doubles rankings.
Sophomore newcomer Louisa Brunetti was also recognized by the ECC, landing a spot on the weekly honor roll. Brunetti made a strong impression in her Queens debut, picking up two wins in the season opener. She began by teaming with senior Emy Alplund for an 8-5 win at second doubles, and then cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win at second singles.
Queens will begin ECC play next, as the Knights welcome Roberts Wesleyan on Friday, Sept. 8, and then Daemen on Saturday, Sept. 9, for a pair of noon matches.
