The 2011-12 campaign marks Alan Nagel’s 33rd season at the helm of the Queens College women’s tennis program. He has registered a winning percentage of .778 (463-132) over that span, guiding the Knights to three NCAA Division II Round-of-16 berths (1995, 2010-11) and 11-consecutive NCAA Division II Championship appearances (2001-11) in the process.

In the 2010-11 season, Nagel guided QC to its 29th-straight winning season (19-2); a second-consecutive East Coast Conference championship; the No. 1 ranking in the East Region; and a No. 24 end-of-season national ranking in the Campbell’s/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll. The Knights’ ledger wrapped up with a NCAA Division II Championships’ Round-of-16 appearance in Altamonte Springs, Fla. – marking the only match Queens would lose to Division II competition in its illustrious slate.

Nagel, who also served as co-head coach of the Queens men’s tennis program during his first three years in Flushing, led the women’s side to Met Conference (and Liberty Division) supremacy in a multi-NCAA division format at the start of his career. QC won the Liberty Division a total of eight times during Nagel’s regime, and won consecutive titles from 1990-95 while topping such illustrious local programs as Manhattan, Wagner, Long Island, Hofstra, St. John’s, Fordham and Fairfield during that time – among other schools.

Once Queens became a NCAA Division II institution in the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (now the East Coast Conference) in 1989, the Knights’ spot on the local tennis map continued to thrive. After winning a regional championship in 1995, QC advanced to its first-ever NCAA Division II Round of 16 (Davis, Calif.) with a team of local standouts. Since then, the team’s diversity has continually increased – with players on the 2011-12 roster coming from such locales as Florida, Georgia, Utah, New York, France, Russia and the Czech Republic. This squad will be charged with carrying on Queens’s runs of 11-consecutive NCAA Division II Championship bids, and the Knights have won nine of the last 10 ECC (formerly NYCAC) Championships.

Nagel, an accomplished tennis player in his own right, has served as the tennis director and head teaching pro at The Hamlet (Jericho, N.Y.) for the last 28 years. He is an eight-time NYCAC/ECC Coach of the Year (2001-05, ’07, ’09-10), and was awarded ITA East Region Coach of the Year accolades in 2011. A former All-Queens baseball pitcher at Far Rockaway High School, Nagel earned a bachelor’s in physical education from the University of Miami before acquiring a master’s in physical education and health from Brooklyn College. A 33-year physical education teacher in the New York City Public School system, he is the father of Todd Nagel (29) – a former scholarship tennis player at Towson University – and resides in Melville, N.Y., with Renee Fox.
