WEST BABYLON, N.Y. – The East Coast Conference (ECC) Volleyball Preseason Poll was released on Wednesday, with the Queens College volleyball team taking the sixth spot. The Knights collected 23 points in the poll, which is voted upon by the league's head coaches.
Defending ECC Champion NYIT sat atop the poll with 60 points and four first-place votes. ECC Regular Season Champion Daemen was second with 52 points and three first-places votes, while Bridgeport was selected third with 49 points and the other vote for first place. Rounding out the top five was LIU Post and Molloy. Meanwhile, Roberts Wesleyan (7th) and Mercy (8th) concluded the poll.
Queens put forth a 7-20 overall record last season, while finishing sixth in the ECC standings with a 3-11 conference mark. The Knights had success at home, with five of their seven wins taking place in Fitzgerald Gymnasium. Furthermore, Queens averaged 2.07 service aces per set, the most by the Knights since the 2010 season.
Third-year head coach Jason Octave returns a large majority of core players from last season. Reigning ECC Co-Rookie of the Year and All-ECC Second Team member Cassidy Stewart, who led the ECC and was 13th in the nation with 0.53 service aces per set last season, returns for her sophomore season. She is joined by a strong group consisting of senior captains Reggie Anthony and Kristen Moore, juniors Nicoletta DiCocco and Leeks Hollis along with sophomore Lauren Kehoe.
The Knights will begin their season at home against Georgian Court on Friday, Sept. 1, at 6 p.m. Queens will open ECC play at home against NYIT on Tuesday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m.
